Hotel de France
Vienna, Austria, October 19-21, 2020
Our second meeting in the fall of 2020 takes us up the road from Budapest to the gem of Austria, Vienna. We’ve had the pleasure of having a meeting in Vienna a few years ago, and its now time to return to the capital of Austria.
Vienna is another must see city in Europe. Its ambiance and architecture are unmatched in this region of Europe. With a plethora of things to do, places to see, and a cuisine that is classic Austrian, Vienna is a step back in time in so many ways. A trip to the Schonbrunn Palace will highlight your day with the opulence of the Hapsburg Dynasty and the elegance of the living quarters of royalty of years past. A stroll through the carriage house is well worth the visit. The carriages that carried the families were the Rolls Royces of the time!
The history of Vienna during World War II is well documented, from its annexation by Germany to the damage sustained during the war. But as the city was rebuilt from the ground up, the city below ground remained fairly intact. There are many restaurants in this city that are located below ground level, sometimes several stories below ground, that maintain the ambiance of the 1700’s.
Conveniently located in the center of Vienna on the Ringstrasse, our host hotel, Hotel de France, is in a perfect position to easily access the large pedestrian center of Vienna, the Kartnerstrasse. The Kartnerstrasse has been in existence since Roman times, and remains a center of activity for local Viennese. Join the locals in an evening stroll, all the while listening to the ubiquitous classically trained street musician playing songs that will be familiar to you while at the same time help your sense the very real part of central Europe that is Vienna.

The cuisine in Vienna is of course Viennese, with the classic Weiner Schnitzel as a staple in so many restaurants. Wurst stands are located throughout the city, and this has to be some of the best street food I’ve ever had. I remember standing in a driving wind and rain storm to enjoy one of Bitzenger Wurstel Stand’s kasekraners, a delish cheese filled wurst. Not surprisingly the cuisine in town is meat and potatos galore, though there are veggies that come with the meals.
The cathedral of St Stephen is just a couple of blocks from the hotel, and along the way there are several coffee houses that Vienna is known for. Stop in, grab a seat, have a coffee and a piece of sacher tort, and enjoy the vibe. Viennese have been known to spend entire afternoons relaxing in the coffee houses, catching up on local and world events. On the way to a coffee house or the cathedral, perhaps you’ll stumble upon the stables of the famous Vienna Lipizzaner Stallions, or see a fine shop (or three!) that gets your attention.
