Amsterdam, Netherlands, June 19-21, 2020
Our fun filled summer 2020 program takes us to the picturesque city of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. With a historical center marked by canals, unique architecture, and a population of less than 1 million people, Amsterdam remains one of the more frequently visited cities in all of Europe. With an average daily temperature in June of 80 degrees, and minimal rain, this is the perfect time to visit this Dutch city.
Once again, our destinations are chosen due to their appeal, ease of navigating a city by foot, and easy access via nearby international airports…Amsterdam meets these criteria very readily. We also poll our attendees and query them about where future meetings should be held, and Amsterdam has been on the list of places to visit.
Our meeting will be held in the historic center of Amsterdam, whose architectural roots began in the 1300’s. Steep, gabled facades are characteristic of the historic center architecture, notably colorful and narrow, the houses and hotels in this area are classic Amsterdam. The canal system throughout the city center offers endless water views, and an endless array of pedestrian friendly streets to meander through, all the while enjoying the myriad of shops and restaurants.
Coffeeshops……well….coffeeshops in Amsterdam take on a slightly different connotation than those, for example, in Vienna. Believe it or not, a coffee house, better referenced as a café, is different than a coffeeshop. Coffeeshops will have green and white stickers in the window, designating them as an official licensed seller of marijuana. While some coffeeshops actually sell coffee, the main reason to visit a coffeeshop is to experience an aspect of Dutch culture that has been around for many years there, but has not developed to the same extent in North America. If you actually want coffee and a light lunch, or an adult beverage in the afternoon, visit a café where you can sit and relax and enjoy a light meal. If you want to relax without an adult beverage, and try something ‘new’, then perhaps consider a visit to a coffeehouse 😊.
Museums abound in Amsterdam, with some of the more famous in Europe with historical significance. The Anne Frank House museum is in the historic center, as are the Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums. In addition, there is a wonderful maritime museum, as well as a museum dedicated to the red light district, located, in of course, the Amsterdam red Light District.
Bicycles and travel by foot is common in Amsterdam. But so too is travel by canal boat. As Amsterdam is lined with 60+ miles of canals, opportunities abound to relax on a canal cruise after a nice walk through town. And as the sun sets, and the streets and canal-side walkways begin to light up, taking a ride on a canal boat offers a great perspective of the city.
