WINTER HOLIDAY 2018/2019 CONFERENCE DETAILS

Bolzano Italy (Italian Alps) December 28-30, 2018

CE in Italy presents a special, exciting new conference event! From the spectacular Duomo in Milan to the romantic city of Verona to the Christmas markets in the Italian Alps, there are so many activities to experience in northern Italy. We have selected the charming city of Bolzano, in the heart of the Dolomites, as the venue for our first CE in Italy Winter Holiday.

When you visit this unique region during December, there are, of course, scenic mountains and world class skiing to explore and enjoy. Alta Badia and Cortina d'Ampezzo are among the most popular and breathtaking of these. You will also have the opportunity to embrace the festive magic of the area and the season, as the spectacular Holiday markets and other events in or near Bolzano extend right through December.

Join us beneath the snowy peaks for 12 hours of COPE approved, ICO sponsored CE on December 28-30, 2018. Relevant topics to the clinical practice of optometry will be covered, all in a relaxed, friendly setting. The warmly welcoming Hotel Greif will be our conference venue and host hotel. Centrally located in Waltherplatz, the main square of the city's historic center, Hotel Greif perfectly combines traditional and modern elements. The Hotel has reserved a limited amount of rooms for our group, but only for a short time as Bolzano is a popular destination at that time of year.

It is best to book your lodging directly with the hotel by sending an email to Ms. Monika Hellrigl at Monika.Hellrigl@greif.it. Alternatively, you may reserve your lodging by using the Hotel's online booking portal here: http://www.greif.it/en/rates-special-offers/online-reservation/. Do indicate that you are with the CE in Italy conference.

Other lodging options may be available at the following sites:

GETTING TO BOLZANO: Bolzano is easy to reach by train or car from the Italian cities of Verona, Milan, and Venice, all of which have major airports. Other nearby cities, also with airports, include Innsbruck, Austria and Munich, Germany.

Registration for this Italian Alps Holiday event is strictly limited and will sell out quickly, so it is imperative that you:

1. Register ASAP for this conference on the registration page and...
2. Book your lodging in Bolzano within the next several weeks at the latest.

** After May 15, 2018, we cannot guarantee that there will be open registration spots or available lodging at the host hotel. **

We've held two previous conferences in this wonderful part of Italy, where two cultures and languages meet. Bolzano is a modern European town in which Italian and German are spoken. The trendy boutiques beneath the medieval arcades in the historic center, variety of museums including the Archaeological Museum and its most famous exhibit, “Ötzi”, the 5.300 year-old “Man from the Glacier”, as well as the numerous cultural events, cable cars which whisk passengers up to cool elevations on the Ritten, Tschögglberg and Kohlern mountains in minutes, and the town’s central location in the heart of Europe combine to make Bolzano uniquely attractive.

Bolzano's cuisine is a great attraction for foodies. It is characterized by diverse flavors. On the one hand, there is a solid genuine country cooking, on the other there are the specialties of the Mediterranean gastronomic tradition. Even though the origin of cuisine in South Tyrol is German both in its execution and in the combination of flavors, there are many influences of the glorious Italian culinary history. You will find on menus signature pastas, Knödel (bread dumplings), ossobuco and Gröstl (beef cooked in a saucepan with potatoes and onions). Wine production in the region has a storied history. Lagrein and Santa Maddalena, the local red wines par excellence, are iconic of this heritage. And the Pinot Gris is among the finest in Europe.

We recommend that you arrive in Bolzano on December 27 or early on December 28. The conference will kick off with CE lectures on Friday, December 28, at 2:00 PM. A welcome reception will be held on that evening in the hotel lounge. There will be NO CE lectures on Saturday, December 29, so the entire day is yours to enjoy. The CE program will resume at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 30, and the meeting will conclude that evening.

12 hours of COPE approved CE sponsored by the Illinois College of Optometry will be offered. We hope to see you on this fantastic venue!

SPRING 2019 CONFERENCE DETAILS

Barcelona, Spain April 11-13, 2019

Our first meeting in 2019 will be held in the wonderful Mediterranean city in the southwest of Spain…Barcelona.  There are many reasons to visit Barcelona at this time of year.  First is the weather….in its geographic location along the Spanish coast, the warm spring breezes bring the town to life, and it’s just about beach weather there at this time of year.  So get out from the long winters in North America, and join us in this temperate location.  Secondly, this city in the Catalonia region of Spain is known for some of the finest foods and wines in Europe, as well as some of the most spectacular art and architecture outside of my native Italy.

While there are several versions of ‘tapas’ in Spain, those of the Barcelona region have been deemed to be the best.  The local seafood is fantastic, as are the wines.  For the carnivores among us, the local meats are also quite special, with the jamon iberico and the jamon serrano topping the list.  Top these meals off with the best red and white wines in west Europe, and you’ve got a perfect combination of fine dining outside in the tropical, but not hot, spring weather.

Out host hotel is in the heart of Barcelona, Hotel Colon.  This is a wonderful hotel in the center of the pedestrian area of Barcelona, in the Gothic quarter.  The hotel sits across the square from the Cathedral of Barcelona, and its roof top spa, pool and bar offer commanding views of the cathedral, especially at night.  From the hotel, you are 15 minutes by foot to some of the most unique areas of Barcelona’s Gothic quarter.  A quick cab ride away is the Sagrada Familia, the amazing Basilica designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi.  While the exterior is quite unique, the interior, especially on a sunny day with the light coming through the stained glass, is something that you must see.  Gaudi’s influence is all over the city….unique, interesting, complex are words that come to mind describing his work.

As mentioned, the host hotel is Hotel Colon, and you can contact them directly via this link for reservations:  https://hotelcolonbarcelona.es/  Be certain to reference our group, CE in Italy/Europe for the discounted room rate.  Be sure to peruse their website to get a feel for the beautiful location and amenities of the hotel.

A welcome reception will be held on the evening of April 11, 2019 at 6PM and continuing until 7:30PM.  Continuing education will begin the following morning, April 12, 2019, promptly at 6:30AM, and continue until just after noon.  A repeat of the CE schedule will occur on April 13, 2019 as well, completing our 12 hours of COPE approved CE.

Tuscany (Castiglion Fiorentino) Italy, April 25-28, 2019

Everyone talks about how beautiful Tuscany is, and frankly, it is!  But the real beauty of Tuscany can be found in many of the small villages found throughout the region.  Walk the small streets of a medieval village, listen to the sounds of the locals and the church bells, experience authentic Tuscan cooking.  And most importantly, slow everything down.  Immerse yourself in the true Tuscany you hear so much about. And relax.  The smile in your soul awaits.

The first Spring 2019 meeting will be held in Castiglion Fiorentino, in the heart of Tuscany.  Many of you probably have not heard of Castiglion Fiorentino, which plays into why we are having the meeting there.  It is a small, medieval hill top walled village that is completely self contained.  Everything you can want or need can be found inside the town walls.  Yet the town is easily accessible by car or train.  Trains from Rome and Florence stop in Castiglion Fiorentino.

You probably have heard of Cortona, which is where the movie Under the Tuscan Sun was filmed.  Cortona is about 6 miles from Castiglion Fiorentino.  It is a beautiful town with fantastic views, but honestly, it is full of tourists.  A great place to visit for a day, and the bus from Castiglion Fiorentino is 2.90 euros town center to town center, but to get the Tuscan experience, Castiglion Fiorentino is the place to be.  Just north of Castiglion Fiorentino lies the city of Arezzo, a larger Tuscan town that is a great mix of medieval streets and the 21st century.  Antiques and jewelry are the top products of Arezzo.  Train ride from Castiglion Fiorentino to Arezzo?….5 minutes and about 4 euros.

This short video captures the essence of Castiglion Fiorentino.  Watch, and you will feel yourself slowing down!

Our conference hotel will be Residence Le Santucce which is inside the medieval walls of the town.  Le Santucce is a converted convent with absolutely beautiful rooms in authentic Tuscan form.  Many of the rooms have kitchens and views of the Val di Chiana, the fertile grape growing region of Tuscany.  View the beautiful Residence Le Santucce here:  www.santucce.com

As a special offering to the CE in Italy participants, please note that if you decide to stay for a full week at Le Santucce, there are several packages that are available to you that can make your stay even more memorable.  Please note that Castiglion Fiorentino is a great jumping off point to explore Tuscany, and having these tours and excursions as part of your hotel stay will make your planning that much easier.

Make your room reservations for Residence Le Santucce directly by contacting Alfeo at:  info@santucce.com

A welcome reception will be held on the evening of April 25 at 6 PM overlooking the Tuscan countryside on the terrace garden.  Continuing education will be from 7:30AM until 11:30AM on the following three mornings (April 26, 27 and 28, 2019) for a total of 12 hours of COPE approved CE.

Residence Le Santucce will fill during the times of our meetings, and if this is the case, that is not a problem.  There are several bed a breakfast facilities in Castiglion Fiorentino that we can locate for you.  As an overflow place to stay, I would suggest the bed and breakfast only a 3 minute walk to Le Santucce called Viziottavo, run by Federico Vannucci.  This quaint B&B has uniquely decorated rooms that are modern and nicely appointed, with a fantastic breakfast assortment.  Here is the link to their website: http://www.viziottavo.com/pages/    You can make your reservations with them by emailing:  info@viziottavo.com    The town is small enough where even if you were staying on 'the other side of town', you would still only have a few minutes walk to Le Santucce.  Contact the kind folks at Le Santucce for your room reservations; should the facility be filled, Alfeo or Luisella will work with you finding another close location.

SUMMER 2019 CONFERENCE DETAILS

Greek Isles Cruise and Athens, July 6-13, 2019  The Ship and Cruise WILL fill soon!

We are stepping outside our usual land based meeting format and offering a cruise option to the Greek Isles during the summer of 2019.  We know that you have several cruise options for obtaining CE available to you, but this is not your typical cruise ship.  Our goal is to bring you excellent education in excellent locations.  The cruise route is the Northern Cyclades, which includes gems such as Mykonos.  You've seen pictures of the area.  But our cruise ship is a 4 masted sailing ship, not the mega cruisers that you are used to seeing.  We will sail from Athens, and return 1 week later to Athens, making several stops during the week.

This cruise was a huge success in 2017, and the registration for this meeting will most certainly fill.  Reserve your space at the conference now.

We will be cruising the eastern Mediterranean on the Star Flyer.  The Star Flyer is as fleet as the wind and as graceful as swans.  It is a true clipper ship reflecting proud heritage in every inch of its polished brass and gleaming brightwork. Step aboard this unique vessel and discover a new age of sail, where the traditions of the past are happily married to the comforts and amenities of the present day. Star Flyer is a modern cruise ship in every way, created for luxury-loving passengers who also love the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ships. Star Flyer is 360 feet long and  carries just 170 guests in pampered comfort

Life aboard is blissfully relaxed, much like traveling on a private yacht. You’ll never feel confined on Star Flyer. The ship offers spacious accommodations and expansive teak decks with ample space and not one, but two swimming pools. In fact, you’ll find that this ship offers more outdoor space per passenger than most conventional cruise ships.

The décor of Star Flyer is reminiscent of the grand age of sail. Antique prints and paintings of famous sailing ships please the eye, while teak and gleaming mahogany rails are richly reminiscent of its proud nautical heritage.  The ship features open-seating dining in an elegantly appointed dining room, an indoor-outdoor Tropical Bar and Piano Bar, and an Edwardian style library where a Belle Époque fireplace glows with a warmth that reflects the friendliness and enthusiasm of Star Clippers’ hospitable officers and crew.

As with any ship, there are several cabin layouts on various decks, and costs per person are dependent upon which cabin type is selected.  The exact cabin price can be determined by contacting our outstanding travel and cruise guide, Denise Marinucci-Nicholson.  Denise has up to date offers and details regarding the cabin costs per person, and she can be reached at:  Denise.TravelDreams@gmail.com   Cabin costs per person are roughly $2500 per person, which includes three full meals per day, stops at the waypoints on the itinerary, amenities, swimming and snorkeling gear for the entire week.  These prices are significantly discounted prices and are subject to change.  Here is the link tour particular cruise on the Travel Dreams website:  https://www.traveldreamsbydenise.com/ce-in-italy-europe   At this link you can find the specific itinerary, cabin layout, deck plan, and of course, photos of the particular ship we will be sailing, the Star Flyer.  There are several items that Denise will need in order to secure your space on the ship....these are standard items (name, address etc), and all of those items will need to be completed before booking can be made.  Again, please contact Denise for detailed pricing. And...additional cabin discounts if you've sailed with Star Clippers previously!

Availability on this destination CE sailing adventure is first come, first served.  You will FIRST need to register with CE in Italy for the continuing education, which will consist of 12 hours of COPE approved CE, 6 of which will be offered on July 5, 2019, THE DAY BEFORE THE SHIP SETS SAIL--PLEASE SCHEDULE YOUR AIRFARE ACCORDINGLY!  These 6 hours of CE will be held at Electra Hotel Athens in the Plaka district of Athens and will begin at 7AM on July 5, 2019.  There are several hotels named 'Electra' in Athens, but each goes by a specific name.....please make sure you go to Electra Hotel Athens for the CE! Thus, half of the CE will be in Athens before the ship departs, and the other half will be on board during the cruise.  After registering with CE in Italy,  you will need to book your cabin directly with Denise at the email address listed above.

REGISTER FOR THIS MEETING EARLY....IT WILL FILL AND REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE WHEN FULL!

Fall 2019 CONFERENCE DETAILS

Prague, Czech Republic September 11-13, 2019

Our first fall 2019 venue takes us to the capital if the Czech Republic, Prague.  Prague is a mysteriously beautiful city full of modern technology and transportation, with a historical Old Town section with architecture reminiscent of the 18th century European character.  The streets in Old Town are pedestrian friendly, cozy, and full of restaurants, shops and all things uniquely 16th century European.  Prague is, after all, the capital of Bohemia!

It’s roots go back to the 14th century when the town grew and flourished during the reign of Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor.  The town grew immensely during this time, leaving for our enjoyment several iconic gems of Prague such as the Charles Bridge, St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle, and of course Old Town itself.  Fires destroyed much of the city in the late 1600’s, and the city was rebuilt to what we see today.  Fortunately, during WWII, much of the city was spared, allowing us to step back into the 15th and 16th centuries as we walk about Old Town.

While the temperature of Prague in the summer is fantastic, Prague is a vacation destination for many Europeans, and the streets become packed with tourists during July and August.  Thus, our meeting will be held in September when the crowds have significantly reduced in size, and the weather remains quite nice, with highs in the 70’s and lows in the mid 50’s.  It’s also less rainy in September than during the summers, which is another great reason to enjoy strolls throughout town during our conference visit.

Our host hotel is the spectacular Grand Mark Hotel Prague, perfectly situated in Old Town Prague.  Please visit the hotel website here:  http://www.grandmark.cz/    Our conference begins on the evening of September 11, 2019 at 6PM with a welcome reception in the bar area of the hotel.  Continuing education will begin promptly at 6:30AM on the mornings of September 12 and 13, 2019, in the Pavilion Room, and will be completed just after noon.  This schedule gives you the freedom to have the day and evening to yourselves and your travel mates, allowing you to absorb into the Czech culture.

To secure your room reservations, you can use the online reservation system for the hotel that is on their website, or you can contact Ms. Dana Dovalilova directly at:  dana.dovalilova@grandmark.cz    Be sure to make note while making your room reservations to reference “CE in Italy/Europe” to assure you’ll get the best rates which we’ve negotiated.  There are many different room types in this hotel, and of course the price varies by which type of room you select, so preview them on the hotel website.  The hotel also has great restaurants, with elegant indoor seating and fantastic outdoor seating in the courtyard. There is also a spa facility with pampering services, and a full fitness club.

Register for the meeting early, as space for this conference is limited, and registrations will be processed on a first come first served basis.  The same holds true for the hotel rooms…..this is a beautiful hotel and it will fill up.  While there are other hotels nearby, keep in mind we start early, and there are some advantages to staying at the host hotel.
